A unique instrument for horizontal and vertical measurement of composite layer thickness in anterior restorations. After layering, but before polymerization of the dentin composite, the thinner, conical tip is placed on the natural tooth enamel. This gently shapes the unpolymerized composite beneath the conical tip, leaving an optimal space (0.5 to 0.7 mm) for the enamel composite layer. The thicker, shorter tip of the Misura instrument is then placed horizontally on the margin of the prepared cavity, so that the edge of the tip rests on the original enamel. This determines the correct amount of translucent composite to be applied at the finish line. As a result, the final aesthetic restoration consists of correctly calibrated opaque and translucent composites, avoiding the undesirable gray effect of composites. The coating makes the tip surface extremely smooth and hard, allowing for non-stick application.
